What to Prepare
Please prepare about one minute of a Shakespearean verse monologue that shows your strengths.
We recommend you come in comfortable clothing and shoes you can readily move in.
Headshots and resumes are heavily encouraged. Please also bring a list of potential rehearsal conflicts.
We strongly encourage actors of all backgrounds, races, body types, gender identities, and experience levels to audition.
Actors should be local to the Inland Empire. Creative Arts Theater is a volunteer-based community theater. There is no pay available for roles at this time.
About the Show
This interpretation of Shakespeare’s Dream is a love letter to the movies and stories that made us all fall in love with magic to begin with. The Shakespearean English will be kept intact with loving academic guidance from our director, and the artistic side of things will take influence from nostalgic fantasy features like Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The Court Jester, and Camelot.
This production will be directed by Kyra Chae with Assistant Director Tim Glisson. Daisy Graham will be Stage Managing with Kaileigh Azevedo as ASM.
Overview of Roles
Lysander
Type: A Lover
Character qualities: Romantic, impetuous, sincere, occasionally hot-headed. He’s passionate and quick to fall into jealousy or devotion.
Actor type: Youthful with charm, comedic timing, and emotional flexibility.
Demetrius
Type: A Lover
Character qualities: More rigid and self-assured than Lysander, Demetrius begins as the antagonist in the love plot but transforms into a more open, softened figure by the end.
Actor type: Physically confident performer who can play both arrogance and tenderness believably.
Hermia
Type: A Lover
Character qualities: Fiery, loyal, brave, and quick to defend her heart. Her emotional volatility contrasts nicely with Helena’s height and self-deprecation.
Actor type: Strong comedic instincts, expressive physicality, and the ability to shift from passion to frustration in an instant.
Helena
Type: A Lover
Character qualities: Romantic, insecure, witty, and resilient. Her self-effacing humor and persistence make her the most self-aware of the lovers.
Actor type: Tall or contrasting physicality to Hermia helps the visual humor, but most important is emotional openness and comic rhythm.
Theseus
Type: King
Character qualities: Grounded, rational, and regal.
Actor type: Commanding presence, a very human kind of strength.
Hippolyta
Type: Queen
Character qualities: Poised, observing, a warrior queen.
Actor type: Wise, grounded, with a clear inner strength.
Egeus
Type: Hermia’s Father
Character qualities: Stern and patriarchal.
Actor type: Father figure, comfortable with classical rhetoric.
Oberon
Type: King of the Faeries
Character qualities: Mystical, proud, and jealous.
Actor type: Commanding presence in ethereality. Movement qualities will be important.
Titania
Type: Queen of the Faeries
Character qualities: Passionate, independent, and graceful.
Actor type: Must be able to command a space and carry something a little inhuman. Movement qualities will be important.
Puck
Type: Oberon’s Jester, Faerie
Character qualities: Mischievous and free-spirited.
Actor type: Quick-witted physical actor comfortable with chaos. Needs agility and spark. Movement qualities will be important.
Bottom / Pyramus
Type: A Player
Character qualities: Endearingly egocentric, theatrical, and full of heart. Bottom drives the humor but must remain lovable.
Actor type: Seasoned comic actor with great timing and vocal versatility, comfortable playing both broad farce and genuine emotion.
Quince
Type: A Player
Character qualities: Quince is the “director” of the mechanicals, nervous, officious, yet earnest. The Narrator role suggests a guiding voice, connecting worlds or helping transitions.
Actor type: Strong communicator, clear diction, and calm authority, ideally someone who can ground the comedy with sincerity.
Snug / Lion
Type: A Player
Character qualities: Gentle, shy, eager-to-please. His attempt to be ferocious as the Lion is comic gold.
Actor type: Warm presence and physical humor, often a scene-stealer.
Flute / Thisby
Type: A Player
Character qualities: The reluctant romantic lead of the mechanicals, who ultimately delivers unexpectedly moving sincerity.
Actor type: Youthful, expressive actor with comic timing and surprising emotional depth.
Snout / Wall
Type: A Player
Character qualities: Dutiful and a bit slow on the uptake. Snout’s commitment to being a “Wall” becomes absurdly funny.
Actor type: Good deadpan humor and ability to sell physical comedy through stillness.
Starveling / Moonshine
Type: A Player
Character qualities: Fussy and precise. Starveling takes his small part seriously, which makes it even funnier.
Actor type: Character actor with dry wit and subtle comedic instincts.
Fairy / Peaseblossom / Cobweb / Moth / Mustardseed
Type: Titania’s Court
Character qualities: Light, ethereal, curious, changeable as the seasons.
Actor type: Strong movement qualities and dance backgrounds, along with bright, mischievous, or playful personalities.
Possible Non-Speaking Roles
Possible roles: Oberon’s court, Hippolyta and Theseus’ court.
